Popular religion says the devil can pluck them out of God’s hand and that
men can pluck themselves out of his hand. But this is to say that both the
devil and men are more powerful than God. We Primitive Baptists
cannot bring ourselves to cast such aspersions upon the Almighty
(Daniel 4:35).
Job said, “The righteous also shall hold on his way” (Job 17:9).
But if the righteous can lose eternal life then Job was mistaken.
Christ said, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me, and him that
cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37), and he goes on to show
that he will not lose any of them but will raise them up at the last day (vs.
38-40). Is anyone so bold as to say Christ was mistaken?
The apostle Paul said he was confident of this very thing, “That he which
hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”
(Philippians 1:6). But if God’s people can lose eternal life then that good
work will not be performed long enough. Shall we believe Paul or popular
religion?
